In 1948 (probably wrote it in the 1930s). Sheldon Chaney published the following: “No one ‘knows’ what the spiritual is, whence wells up the divine apprehension, the creative impulse and expression. No more can anyone write assuredly of the aesthetic. But there it is: art, the impulse toward it, creative or appreciative, its ‘works’ and the satisfaction or rapture they afford. And men are curious about it.”
